- How was Akshayakalpa founded?
Akshayakalpa was founded by Mr. Shashi Kumar, who, from 2001 to 2009, was involved in the Yuva Chetana program, where he encouraged and trained young people in rural areas to take up farming as a vocation. This led to the creation of a rural entrepreneurship model, highlighting successful farmers as role models. In late 2010, Shashi Kumar and his friends bootstrapped Akshayakalpa with the aim of transforming farming into a sustainable and profitable vocation and rethinking the way farming is practiced
- Why do you work with the farmers so closely?
It wouldn’t be possible for us to deliver high-quality organic products without the strong rapport and coordination between Akshayakalpa and our farmers. Often, there is a disconnect between farmers and end consumers, but by working closely with both, we aim to bridge this gap. We provide our farmers with agricultural guidance, access to technology, infrastructural support, veterinary care for their cattle, financial services through banks, and markets for their organic produce. Our aim is to help them thrive while ensuring they receive fair prices for their efforts, and our customers enjoy the highest quality products.
- Why are Akshayakalpa Organic milk and milk products expensive as compared to others in the market?
Setting up an Akshayakalpa farm is an expensive process that requires substantial investment from both us and the farmer. A farmer can only produce high-quality milk if it is economically viable for them. Therefore, farmers need to be compensated differently compared to conventional practices.
Since we are certified organic and strictly produce all our products organically, we are required to employ strict protocols to ensure the same, which adds up to the overall cost. Further, during milk production we spend heavily on testing kits, maintaining a continuous cold chain during transportation, and employing substantial manpower at various stages. Currently, the number of people who understand and value this milk is limited. However, as more consumers begin to appreciate its quality, the cost per consumer will decrease.
So, when you choose Akshayakalpa products, you’re not just investing in the high-quality products and your health—you’re also supporting the economic well-being of farmers by encouraging healthy farming practices that safeguard their soil and farm health.
- How do you enable farmers to produce milk without antibiotics?
Oftentimes, when a cow is ill, farmers use strong antibiotics to treat the cow. This antibiotic residue ends up in the milk, thus contaminating it. This is a common problem in conventional dairy production systems as there is no control on the farm level production processes. However, Akshayakalpa controls every activity at the farm to ensure the highest quality of milk. All our cows undergo regular check-ups by our veterinarians and are primarily treated using safe, traditional home remedies. Farmers are also trained to administer medications responsibly. When necessary, medications are used strictly under veterinary supervision, prioritizing the cows’ health and safety.
- What are the induced hormones you talk about and why are they dangerous?
In conventional dairy farming, cows are often treated with induced/synthetic growth hormones to increase milk yield. However, these hormones raise the risk hormonal imbalances, weakened immunity among other side effects in cows. They can also seep into the milk, posing serious risks to human health, including hormonal disruptions, pregnancy complications, and other concerns.
At Akshayakalpa farms, the use of induced growth hormones is strictly prohibited, ensuring the health of both our cows and our consumers.
- Whom can I give my feedback or suggestions to?
We are always eager to hear from our patrons. You can reach out to us at +91-9535388122 or write to us support@akshayakalpa.org.
- Where are your farms located?
We focus on delivering fresh products to our customers while ensuring our farms are close to our farmers. To maintain freshness and an uninterrupted cold chain, we’ve carefully chosen locations that are convenient for both farmers and major cities, while keeping a safe distance from urban pollution. Today, we have farms in Tiptur near Bengaluru, Shadnagar near Hyderabad, and Pooriyambakkam near Chennai.
- I would like to see where my glass of milk comes from.
Akshayakalpa actively encourages everyone to visit our organic farms and spend time with farming families so that they know not only where their glass of milk comes from but also the food on their plates. In the process, they can understand and appreciate the effort that goes into producing organically and following the strict protocols associated with it.
We believe that when people truly recognize the value of their food, they will be inspired to return to their roots and grow it themselves someday.
To visit our farms, you can click on this or write to us support@akshayakalpa.org. We will facilitate your stay at our farms.
- How do you take care of quality at the farm level?
At Akshayakalpa, we ensure that we have complete control over the farm activities. The milking process at our farms is completely automated, leaving no scope for the milk being touched by human hands. The milking is done using machines that imitate the sucking of a calf; the milk then goes to Bulk Milk Coolers where it is chilled to 4°C. We also carry out testing at farm level itself to detect any trace of antibiotics or additives in the milk. The test results are then uploaded to the cloud so we can closely monitor them regularly.
- What do you mean when you say your farms are self-sustaining?
Our farms are an embodiment of how nature carries out its processes. All the elements in nature exist in a symbiotic relationship, where each enriches the other. We at Akshayakalpa farms practice a closed loop soil management system. Our farms do not require any external elements to sustain.
The fodder for the cows is grown on the farms themselves, by Akshayakalpa farmers. The cow dung is used to produce methane gas which is then used as a fuel for cooking food, lighting and heating, and other day-to-day activities at the farm. The slurry from the bio-gas plant goes back to the soil as manure, and the cycle continues. By eliminating external inputs, we reduce unnecessary costs while ensuring our farms remain organic and free from chemicals.
- How do you take care of the health of the cows?
Our cows roam freely in a dedicated paddock area and are never tied. They enjoy unlimited access to organic fodder and clean drinking water, allowing them to decide what and how much to consume. Calves are initially nourished with colostrum milk and are gradually weaned to curated fodder as per their age and build ensuring a healthy start to life. To take it a step further, we equip the cow sheds with rubber mats to provide a comfortable resting space for the cows and protect their hooves while standing. Lastly, our trained ethno-veterinarians conduct regular check-ups to ensure our cows remain healthy and content.
- What do you mean when you say your cows are healthy and happy?
To us, cows are not a mere asset but a living breathing animal, each with their own identities and personalities. We strive to keep them happy by creating an environment that allows them to live as nature intended. Cows express their happiness by jumping around and playing. Our cows roam freely in a dedicated paddock area and are never tied. When it rains, they find shelter in the paddock, and on cold days, they bask in the warmth of the sun. They always have access to fodder and potable water. We believe that if the water is not fit for our own consumption, it is not fit for our cows to consume. Our cows decide what to eat, how much to eat, and when to eat, ensuring their well-being and comfort.
- Why is it necessary for cows to roam freely?
By allowing our cows to roam freely, we ensure they have the freedom to run, jump, and play, promoting their overall well-being. This practice also helps maintain hygiene, as the cows are not confined to sitting in their own dung or urine. Additionally, they can seek shelter from harsh weather conditions like rain or extreme heat, ensuring their comfort and health.
- What happens when the cows are unwell?
Our cows get a regular check-up from expert vets trained in ethnoveterinary practices. When the cows are unwell, the vets try to treat them with safe, natural remedies. However, if it becomes necessary to treat the cow with antibiotics, the cow is quarantined till there is absolutely no trace of antibiotic in the milk.
- What breeds of cows do you have on your farms?
A prominent factor that affects the milk quality of a cow is the weather that they live in. It is important to ensure that our cows are well accustomed to the local weather and climatic conditions. Thus, we have cross breeds as well as indigenous breeds such as ‘Hallikar’ and ‘Amrit Mahal’ – all of which are born locally. It is important to maintain genetic diversity in our cattle to ensure strong health, better productivity, and resilience in the long run. The weather in which a cow lives in can significantly affect the cow’s health, thus affecting the quality of milk produced.
- What fodder do Akshayakalpa cows eat?
The quality of milk is highly dependent on what the cow is fed. Each cow is different and requires a different mix of fodder depending on its age and build. We provide a mix of organic fodder which includes monocots (maize, ragi and local jowar) and dicots (cow pea and velvet beans) along with tree fodder (moringa), all of which are grown organically by the farmers themselves. A healthy mixture of dry fodder, green fodder and tree fodder keeps our cows happy and content.
- How do you enable farm-level chilling?
Our vision is to create value for our farmers by creating value for our Patrons. Therefore, to ensure that we deliver the best quality milk, we put great effort into building each farm of ours. Ensuring that all our farms are equipped with the appropriate infrastructure enables our farmers to deliver quality milk that meets our standards. Akshayakalpa is the first dairy company that has Bulk Milk Coolers at each farm. Immediately after milking, milk is chilled to inhibit microbial growth and keep the nutritional value of the milk intact.
- Is the milk truly untouched by human hands?
Yes. At every step of the supply chain, we take strict precautions to avoid milk from contamination of any sort, which includes our own hands. Starting at the farms, the cows are milked using machines, ensuring that our milk is untouched by human hands, reducing the risk of contamination. After milking, we transport it to the Bulk Milk Chillers (BMC) through attached pipelines. After chilling to under 4°C, the milk is moved to the plant in insulated tankers designed to maintain the chillness of the milk. At the plant, following a series of tests, the milk is packaged and is dispatched, which leaves no scope for milk being touched by human hands.
- What is unique about Akshayakalpa Organic milk?
At Akshayakalpa, we combine advanced technology with traditional practices to ensure that the milk you receive is of the highest quality and untouched by human hands. The quality of milk you get is highly dependent on how well the cow is taken care of, and at Akshayakalpa, our cows enjoy 24/7 access to organic fodder and clean water, with the freedom to roam. Our Organic Milk is chilled immediately after milking at the farm to prevent microbial growth, preserving its freshness and nutritional value. This careful approach ensures that our milk is free from growth hormones and stress hormones, or any antibiotics.
- What is organic?
To call something organic, there has to be a good definition and understanding of the word. To us, organic means a harmony amongst humans, soil and resources. In an ideal organic ecosystem, there will be no external inputs such as chemical fertilizers, pesticides or any additive manure. Such an ecosystem will be self-reliant and thrive with biodiversity. This co-existence is, to us, organic, just the way nature intended.
- What is organic milk?
Organic milk is the result of a symbiotic relationship between humans, soil, and cows, and its journey begins long before the milking process. The fodder fed to the cows must be grown on organic soil, free from synthetic fertilizers and pesticides. The cows must be cared for in a clean environment, allowed to roam freely, and given 24/7 access to organic food and clean water. Additionally, they must not be treated with antibiotics or subjected to artificial interventions. When these practices are followed, the milk produced by these healthy cows can truly be called organic.
- Are Akshayakalpa milk and milk products certified organic?
Across the globe, there are multiple organizations that regulate the production of Organic food. In India, it is done by Agricultural and Processed Food Product Export Development Authority (APEDA). Akshayakalpa Organic Milk and Milk products are certified organic as per the guidelines of APEDA. We also have the Jaivik Bharat certification.
- What differentiates Akshayakalpa Organic milk from the other milk available in the market?
At Akshayakalpa, we ensure high-quality milk from the very start. With complete control over farm activities, we detect and prevent any issues early. Our organic milk is free from antibiotics and growth hormones. It is sourced from stress-free cows that roam freely and have unlimited access to organic fodder and clean water. Usage of antibiotics and growth hormones are strictly prohibited. Milking is done with machines that mimic the natural sucking process, preventing contamination. We’re the only dairy in India with farm-level testing and chilling. After milking, the milk is chilled at 4°C in Bulk Milk Chillers (BMCs) to curb bacterial growth, tested for antibiotic traces, and results are uploaded to the cloud for continuous monitoring. Thus, you can drink with confidence knowing that we have taken precautions to make our products as safe and pure as possible.
- What is antibiotic-free milk?
According to WHO, antibiotic resistance is one of the biggest threats to global health today. It can affect anyone, regardless of age. The unregulated use of antibiotics in humans and animals increases the risk of antibiotic resistance. This resistance reduces the effectiveness of medicines used to treat diseases, making it harder to treat infections.
Therefore, at Akshayakalpa, unauthorized use of antibiotics is strictly prohibited. To ensure this, we test our milk multiple times, at the farm level as well as at the plant to make sure there are no antibiotic traces in the milk. If any test is found to be positive, the milk is immediately discarded at the farm level itself, making sure that the contaminated milk does not enter the milk pool. However, if it becomes necessary to treat the cow with antibiotics, the cow is quarantined till there is absolutely no trace of antibiotic in the milk.
- How does the shelf life of raw milk affect its nutritional value?
The shelf life of raw milk can impact its nutritional value. Fresh raw milk is rich in nutrients like vitamins, proteins, and beneficial enzymes. However, as milk ages, microbial activity increases, leading to spoilage and a reduction in nutritional quality. To retain its nutritional value, raw milk should be consumed within its recommended time frame and stored at low temperatures to slow microbial growth.

- Is A2 milk more nutritious than A1 milk?
There are multiplies studies that have been carried out on this topic. However, there is no conclusive scientific evidence that proves that A2 milk is more nutritious. The nutritional value and quality of milk primarily depends on what the cow consumes.
- Why does Akshayakalpa Organic milk sometimes appear thin?
Akshayakalpa Organic Milk is pure cow milk. We deliver milk to you the way it comes from cows, without processing it. Our cows are not force-fed, they choose what they want to eat and how much they want to eat. The milk is non-homogenized and non-standardized. We do not add any artificial additives to the milk. That is why it may appear thin sometimes.
- Is Akshayakalpa Organic milk processed?
No. Except for Akshayakalpa Organic Slim Milk in which the fat is removed, no other Akshayakalpa Organic Milk is processed.
- Why does the thickness of the milk vary when it is not processed?
As opposed to common perception, unprocessed milk cannot have a uniform thickness and cream content. Natural processes don’t give constant outcomes. Naturally fed cows give milk differently in summer and in winter. On a hot summer day, a cow consumes less food and drinks a lot of water. This leads to a lower fat content in milk. On a hot summer day, we too drink more water and tend to eat less. We believe it is beneficial for us to be the way nature intends us to be.
- Why is the milk yellowish in color?
Beta Carotene is a pigment found in good amounts in green fodders. When cows eat green fodder, the Beta Carotene gets soluble in milk fat. All the fodder that our cows eat is grown using Organic methods on Akshayakalpa farms. Growing organic fodder ensures our cows get the right quality of food.

Akshayakalpa Organic Malai Paneer has 50% milk solids and 50% moisture. Further, we do not add any artificial emulsifiers and preservatives to the Paneer. Akshayakalpa Organic Artisan cheese is made from wholesome organic cow milk using traditional methods. We do not add artificial emulsifiers or preservatives to the cheeses; the only preservative it contains is Organic Himalayan Pink Salt. It takes around 3 months to make Akshayakalpa Cheeses. The cheese is first made using microbial rennet under certain conditions, no animal rennet is used. Then the freshly made cheese is pressed into blocks using weights. These blocks are then aged in ripening rooms with a temperature of 15 degree C and 80% humidity. The blocks are turned and checked every day to ensure there are no molds growing on the cheeses. While other cheeses in the market are highly processed using industrial methods, Akshayakalpa prefers to do it in an Artisanal method.
- What are artisan cheeses?
Cheese is milk’s journey to immortality. 1 gram of cheese has as much nutrition as 10 grams of milk. The best cheeses in the world are handcrafted using traditional methods. These cheeses are aged in ripening rooms. Aged cheeses lose moisture and become harder. Aged cheeses made using traditional methods, have a longer life naturally. They do not have emulsifiers or preservatives. Aged cheeses can stay in a good quality for months together.
- What is the shelf life of Akshayakalpa Organic artisan cheeses?
Akshayakalpa cheeses are made using traditional methods which helps naturally enhance the life of the cheeses. After the cheese is made, it is pressed using weights for up to 12 hours. It is then kept on stone slabs in ripening rooms for up to 90 days, where each block is carefully turned and inspected daily. Our artisans lightly dab the cheese blocks with olive oil to prevent the growth of molds, ensuring the cheese ripens perfectly without compromising quality or flavor. Akshayakalpa Organic Pizza Cheese has a shelf life of 30 days from manufacturing whereas, all Akshayakalpa Organic Cheddar Cheeses have a shelf life of 90 days from manufacturing.
- There are molds on my cheeses. What do I do?

Milk, after it undergoes several tests, is chilled immediately after milking to 4° C at the farm level to stop any bacterial growth. After chilling at the farm level, milk is moved to the processing plant in insulated tankers designed to ensure milk stays fresh throughout. Once the milk reaches our processing plant, we conduct additional tests to ensure the milk is pure and free from any additives. The milk is then packed in pouches or paper board packing and takes a final journey to your doorstep in continuous cold chain vehicles. This entire process takes about 24 to 36 hours to reach you and hence stays fresh.
